'Exciting Eleven' - Healthy Cooking Tips!

Children love burgers ,fries, pastas , cakes , cookies etc. My philosophy of making food healthy for
my kids is to let them have a more nutritious version of their favorites.

    1. Replacing the white foods with more nutritious brown versions. For example brown / multi grain
bread instead of white , jaggery instead of sugar , whole wheat flour in cakes instead of maida ,
raagi being used in cakes and cookies..

    2. Adding veggies like spinach , beetroot in puree form to pastas , dhokla , pulaos which gives color
and essential nutrients. makes the dishes more appealing to the little ones not only with an added
dash of color but mostly with an enhanced taste factor, not to mention the increased nutrition
    quotient.

    3. Adding dry fruits like almonds and walnuts in powder form to cakes , cookies , kheer , halwa to
ensure intake of necessary minerals and vitamins.

    4. Adding soya granules after boiling and mashing to recipes like cutlets , burger patties to
increase the protein supply..and the children think it is a aloo patty !!

    5. Deep-freezing the pulp of fresh fruits like strawberry , mango , cheeku etc which can be added to
milkshakes instead of packaged crushes(with all their chemical preservatives!). Sugary soft drinks
can also be replaced by adding soda or water to the fruit concentrates for a refreshing healthy
    drink.

    6. Kids love french fries ..cant stop them so I prefer to make fries from fresh potatoes by
marinating with olive oil and spices. Then baking them in oven or grilling in microwave. similar
process can be followed for most of the snack dishes which traditionally we think need to be fried.

    7. Substituting coconut milk for cashews to give creamy texture to gravies - my kids tell me they are
    tastier.

    8. Replacing store bought butter with home made white butter for dishes like paranthas or a simple
bread toast where it is so essential.

    9. To increase the fruit intake , I try and make desserts like kulfi , ice cream , cake or a pudding
at home using pulp of the seasonal fruits.

    11. Kids making a face and not wanting to take milk or fruits - give it a twist and make a 'fruit-
custard' - yummy , colorful and nutritious.

Try out some of the above tips and watch your kids become healthier and happier !!
