When I was expecting my first baby, my maid once told me that I was carrying a boy. I laughed it off. I have always thought that most old-wives tales and gender prediction tips are silly! How can you predict the gender of a life breeding inside someone’s womb? But when I did deliver a boy, the first thing I remember thinking was - “Oh! That maid was right!”

Strange and funny as they may sound, we have all heard about desi gender prediction tips to find out the sex of the baby. I am sharing here some tips I have heard from friends, relatives and family - mostly women in their 50s, to be honest.

Most of them seem ridiculous, and science has also confirmed this. I hope moms-to-be will learn from this to NOT believe in them!

    1. Carrying high or low:

If you are carrying low, it's a boy. If you're carrying high, it's a girl. This is how this belief goes. Well, I was carrying low and it turned out to be a boy. A friend was carrying higher and she had a girl. But hey, this was probably only a coincidence. Science says that a child’s genitals have nothing to do with how the woman’s body looks while pregnant. It's more to do with the size of the baby and not the sex!

    2. Heart beat:

They say the heart rate will be faster for girls than boys. I couldn't sort of ever take this one seriously! Besides, if this one is a genuine gender prediction criteria, our government should ban ultrasound clinics from giving out exact heart beat rates to the expecting parents. But the fact is that, according to science, the heart beat has nothing to do with the sex of the baby but about his activity instead. Also, just saying - my boy’s heart beat was never fast!

    3. Pregnant mother’s complexion:

It is believed that if a mother experiences sudden breakouts/acne, then it’s a girl. But if her skin is glowing, then it’s a boy. In my case, however, it was the opposite! How your skin looks has nothing to do with the gender of your baby - it's just hormones!

    4. Morning sickness:

My mother-in-law said that if you have a terrible morning sickness in your first trimester, it is most likely to be a girl. I was throwing up and got to a point where I started losing weight. This is how super sick I was. And guess what - I ended up having a boy :)

    5. Sleep position:

Prepare for this one: sleeping on your left side means you are having a boy! Sleeping on your right indicates a girl. It’s funny! Isn't it? I mean, we tend to sleep in the most comfortable position, be it right or left. Can it ever be constant? I shifted positions all across trimesters!

    6. The pregnant mother's mood:

I was told that if you’re way too emotional, pick up fights, and feel extremely moody, it means a girl. Well, I was having major meltdowns across trimesters. It wasn’t a girl!

    7. Carrying out in front or all around:

This one says that if you’re carrying all out in front (prominently protruding in front) it means a boy, and more all around then it is a girl. Oh well!

These desi gender prediction tips have been around for several years and passed across generations. At times, they may sound accurate and even turn out to be true. But they may turn out to be completely false too and you will just feel like laughing out loud!

The fact is that most of these tips have limited scientific backing and are best ignored. After all, be it a girl or a boy, at the end of the day, every parent prays for healthy baby. To a mother, that's all that matters.
