    Guest Contributor,
I am from Bengaluru, India. Aparna Vinod is Communications Professional who revisited her love for crafting after the birth of her daughter Little U. The curious young adventurer Little U & Aparna started exploring creative spaces together which ultimately resulted in The Craft Caravan, a craft activity space for both adults and children. The Craft Caravan began its journey in August 2014 in Bangalore. Work conducted by The Craft Caravan is driven by the belief that crafting brings the mind, the heart and the hands together, united in one common purpose. Craft is not relegated to the hobby table but approached as a way to understand, learn, express and to become sensitive to the environment. The Craft Caravan has conducted workshops for schools, corporates, organizations and events across the country. To check the journey so far visit www.thecraftcaravan.in

As children many of us dreamt of owning a Dolls' house. A miniature home filled with furniture, tiny people and cherished belongings sounded so enchanting. When Lil U was 3 years old we decided to build her a Dolls' house. Dada designed it and assembled it. I chose the furniture, the wall paper and sewed the curtains. We keep adding to parts of the house each time an interesting miniature, knick knack is spotted. For all the hours of fun it provides, it is Lil U’s most valued toy (pssst pssst …. may I confess it is my favourite too!)

Further to the hours of fun and the catharsis of seeing miniature objects, a dolls house is a valuable educational toy for it aids pretend play. Pretend play is natural to all children. Before the advent of television and video games, creating fantasies was the only way that children could play. This ancient art of make-believe is an integral part of childhood experiences.
Pretend play provides important educational benefits for intellectual and social development in children. When children are engaged in imaginary play they are able to freely investigate and learn about the world around them.

    BENEFITS OF PRETEND PLAY

    Language Skills

In pretend play children invent scenarios and tell stories. As they narrate their experiences, they train their minds to transform thoughts into words. As children mimic and repeat scenarios they are training themselves to speak imagine and create. Thus, pretend play begins a cycle of imagination that feeds back into itself.

    Social Skills

Pretend play helps children learn compassion, empathy, and understanding. It allows space for children with varied personalities to engage with their environments differently.  Many a time children are seen emulating their parents/ teachers in pretend play situations, thereby reinstating acceptable social behaviour.

    Opportunities for bonding & fun

Pretend play is a great way for the family to engage in healthy fun. It provides ample scope for learning and allows children to choose their situations and solutions. An adult being part of pretend play helps reinforce acceptable behaviour and empathy in practical ways.

PLAY ACTIVITIES WITH A DOLL HOUSE

    • Ask child to sequence events in a day by acting out typical routines from morning to evening.
    • Ask child to reorganize their doll house to accommodate more people.
    • Ask child to act out all the chores that need to be done on a daily basis for maintaining a home.

Pretend play is an excellent source of creativity, insight, and maturity for young children. It is also an opportunity for parents to engage in the interests and budding personalities of the child.
