Last year, when my mom visited me for a few days during my post-delivery time, it sure was a breather. She pretty much took charge of a lot of things without me having to worry a bit. Laundry, dusting, cooking, putting newborn to sleep (while I could rest).
She is a fun grandmom! We would stay up talking about how life has changed. But then, abruptly, she also started pointing out at things which I thought were a bit of an over-reaction. And then one day, my mother-in-law’s friend too couldn't help but pass a remark at me. And for something really odd.
I was taking my baby’s pictures with the handset. She saw me doing it and said something that kept echoing in my ears:
“In our days, memories were made for real with a proper camera! We stored them in our minds and through hard copies so that we could cherish them forever!
You, today’s modern moms - your lot gets away with doing not even 10% of what we did back in our days.”
That statement hit me so bad! It was such a sarcastic one. I wanted to tell her that women of your times would have never even imagined doing 90% of the things many modern day moms do!
So here I am writing about some of "modern mom things" that I love doing and I have no qualms about even a single one of these!
I store memories on my phone and share with mommy friends on WhatsApp
At my parent’s place, there is a special cabinet for photo-albums. Our family vacations would be incomplete without a camera loaded with Fuji film. My dad would carry around a camera without fail to weddings, picnics, holidays and parties. There were no digital screens to see if we looked cute and approved it. No re-takes. These days, we have cameras on a little device in our pockets that can capture any moment at any given time. ‘Modern moms’ on my WhatsApp group share their babies poop pictures to ask each other if it’s a healthy one! How lucky are we?! And this - my MIL would find so ghastly!
I scroll for recipes on Pinterest. My mom is a pro at cooking. But guess what? I am not.
I admit I don’t quite know how to cook a three-course flawless, delicious dinner for 10 guests. Besides, I suck at baking. So for the first two birthdays we ordered my little one’s cake from the bakery. But I eventually learnt how to bake a three-tier cake for his third one. Most moms of my mother’s generation might not approve of us cooking while browsing through our handsets, but I am in love with online sources that have EVERY meal idea, and recipes, all in one place!

I am way too comfortable in my messy-bun to dress up for every occasion
Yes, I am in love with my messy bun. I am also in love with my yoga pants and that tee you saw me wearing the other day. My mother disapproves of 'this' look. She wants me to dress up even for a trip to the nearby grocery store. But, what to do? I LOVE the look of modern day moms!
I text my husband while he is sitting in the next room - and the reason concerns my baby!
“Why would you spend bucks texting someone who is right there, beside you, like physically?” asked my dad. I didn’t have an answer. Maybe it is such a ‘modern mom’ thing to do. But the fact is that I don’t want my fast-asleep baby to wake up while he is still sucking on my breast!
So, isn't it convenient to just type a few characters and get your work done without making any noise? “Hey, hun- will you throw me a diaper?”, “Hey, will you come get this sleeping baby and put him in the cot?”
There are several other practices of a modern mom (like me) that are sort of looked down upon, for instance - enjoying ‘me-time’ by stepping out solo on weekends leaving the little one behind in dad’s custody. Or not opting for a maalish-wali (traditional masseur) for your newborn, instead, doing it on your own.
People tell me I am a 'modern' mom because I do some things differently. And even though I can sense it’s not a compliment, I still take it in my stride.
