Sexual behavior in kids can vary from developmental appropriate to abusive, and brutal conduct. The act of self-pleasure can be addictive, and if not controlled at right time can become obsessive. Explaining to a teen that exploiting your body can be harmful in the longer run, is next to impossible for a parent. Hence, parents should understand the mental state of their child and distract him by doing productive activities instead.

Excess of everything can be harmful, and when it comes to increase in a child’s sexual behavior, it becomes a concerning situation for parents. Scolding a teen to stop performing such activities is not a solution, and may even aggravate the problem further. The developmental transition can be ruined if not channeled properly. Therefore as a parent, teaching your kids about self-discipline and controlling excessive sexual impulses should be your primary responsibility.

Parent’s Role in Educating Child about the Negative Consequences of Over-Masturbating

Many children have a habit of sucking their thumbs, while sleeping or touching their genitals regularly in a day. Every kid, while growing up, goes through a phase where he starts understanding and becoming aware of his sexuality. During such a phase, touching his private parts or masturbating or sitting too close to someone or watching nudity or thinking about sex; is normal and healthy behavior.
However, it is imperative that the child understands the limit to self-gratification. Parents should encourage their kids to distract their mind with other activities that involve adrenaline rush, like participating in outdoor or indoor sports or pursuing new hobbies. Parental support is very important when a teen is going through a phase of physiological transition and emotional confusion.

Therefore, even if as a parent, you find the situation awkward, you should still never ignore it and must try to resolve it. Children, who develop chronic masturbation addiction usually end up losing sex drive and even face problems related to impotence and infertility.
The foremost challenge that lies in this situation is that a parent can’t know for sure whether his child actually has a problem, or he is just being paranoid. Until you catch your child engaging in self-abuse on innumerable occasions or he himself comes to you for help, you can’t be presumptive and start preaching to your child. Hence, you must handle the issue with patience and care.

Steps to Prevent Sexual Impulses in Children: Kick the Bad Habit

    1. Find other activities for your child, like playing sports, joining a drawing class, yoga or anything productive for a teenager that consumes time and energy. The thrill and enthusiasm of doing something creative and new will help them divert their minds from performing masturbation.
    2. Healthy diet will always build a healthy mind. Eating proper nutrients and antioxidants throughout the day will provide energy that will help your teenager remain active and hopefully engaged in constructive activities.
    3. Encourage your child to read before going to bed, if that is usually the time when he feels like masturbating. Suggest him to use ice-cold water in a shower that won’t give relaxation and wear layer of clothes while sleeping which can make it difficult to remove when an impulse to masturbate does rear its ugly head.

    5. Make your child’s routine socially active and encourage him to spend time outside home with friends where his mind is diverted from sexual activity.
    6. Try moving your child’s computer or other gadgets in a common room where instead of watching porn all the time, he can actually spend time together with family to learn something new.
    7. Chronic masturbation can be a result of stressful or depressed life. To cheer up or calm your child’s nerves, encourage him to start doing yoga or meditation. These activities are not only good for physical health but can result in a much calmer and satisfied state of mental being.
    8. When all the above options are not good enough to stop this habit in your kid, never hesitate to take professional help where required. A child psychologist can definitely help your teen to grow out of such urges and motivate him in the right direction.
    9. The more you try to force something, the lesser it actually happens. Instead of focusing on kicking these habits, try to understand other ways that might provide satisfaction or pleasure to your child. Your goal shouldn’t be to achieve suppression of these urges, but make your child see the logical reasons behind giving up excessive masturbation.
Masturbation is not an offence or disease; every boy and girl in their teenage experience the unusual increase in sexual desires and masturbating in moderation is actually healthy. The obsession of masturbation, on the other hand, is risky, as well as destructive. Guiding your child in the right way is important, before things get out of hand.
