It’s important to know what gross motor skills are. These are a set of abilities involving the larger muscle groups of the body. They include crawling, running and jumping among others.

      • They can stand on one foot for around 3 seconds
      • They can walk on a line and climb stairs up and down without railing support
      • They can jump forward and also jump off a short height with feet together
      • Another example of gross motor skills for preschoolers is that they can use a slide independently
      • They can kick a stationary ball almost 6 feet. Moms, make sure they do it outside!
      • They can pedal a tricycle for a short distance
    • Gross motor skills for 4-year-olds

      • They can stand on one foot for at least 5 seconds
      • They can jump over small hurdles as well jump up onto a step with both feet
      • They can alternate directions while running without losing their balance
      • An interesting gross motor developmental milestone in 4-year-olds is that they can walk backwards on a line

How to Develop Gross Motor Skills in Preschoolers

Encourage your child to climb up stairs one foot at a time to boost coordination between the body and limbs. Set aside playground time for your little one. Let her jump, hop, run or ride a tricycle/bicycle. It’ll help in strengthening her lower body’s muscle groups. Gross motor skills development can also be enhanced by arranging musical play-dates for them.

Now that you know what the gross motor skills for preschoolers are, help your child to achieve these developmental milestones. Do remember that all kids reach milestones at different ages and if your child hasn't achieved them yet, he will soon.
