Kids, especially the growing ones, can be quite fussy and skeptical of trying out new foods. And this happens, especially when the food ‘looks’ healthy. Therefore, we’ve come up with a few selected snack ideas for kids that are appealing as well as can be made ahead of time for on the fly snacking. The best part? You can involve the kids and cook the dishes together.

As kids grow, their appetite also starts increasing. You will often find your 5 year old in the kitchen searching for something to snack on. As a parent, you need to ensure that your kid is not filling himself with junk food like biscuits loaded with refined flour, sugar and margarine, that has low nutritional value.

To ensure this, you must have a handy list of snacks that can be prepared in a jiffy. Also, you will need to know a few of those healthy snacks for kids that can be prepared in advance and stored.

Ideas for Quick Snacks for Kids

    • Yoghurt Granola Fruit Parfait:

Pretty to look at and easy to make, these parfaits can be prepared in matters of minutes. In fact, you can prepare them in advance and store them in the fridge. Take tall glasses and put a layer of yoghurt, followed by chopped fruits and granola. Repeat the layer one more time and you are done. You can use plain or flavoured yoghurt. Add different fruits - chopped banana, berries, peaches – any fruit that your kid likes will do.
    • Bean Burrito:

Bean Burritos pack that extra protein punch that is much needed for your growing kid. Preparing the burrito from scratch can take a while but, when you get ready to use whole wheat tortilla wraps and canned beans, it can be prepared a lot quicker. You just need to spoon the beans into the center of the tortilla and roll them up. Keep the burrito in a sandwich griller to warm it up a bit. It is quite a filling dish that will keep hunger pangs away from your kid for a while.
    • Zucchini Boats:

This name might not seem very appealing to your kid. But, to tell you the truth, your kid will be bowled over by the taste of these savory boats. You just have to cut zucchini lengthwise into halves and scoop out the center part. You have to actually make a boat of the half part. Next, apply some tomato sauce, place a few mushrooms and eggplant roundels, and top them up with some spiced cheese. If you want it to have a more ‘desi’ touch, sprinkle some curry masala on top. Place in a pre-heated oven and bake for 20 minutes or until tender

    • Chocolate Banana Crepes:

Chocolate and bananas are a classic combination that you just can’t go wrong with. If you are in the mood for some cooking, make crepes from scratch. Apply some chocolate peanut butter or Nutella on it, add some diced bananas, wrap it and let your kid enjoy his delicious snack. If you are pressed for time, try a cheat’s version using flour tortilla. Just warm it in the microwave and the rest of the process is same.
    • Hummus with Pita Chips:

If you have a can of chickpeas handy, churning hummus is quick and easy. We have seen that kids who are averse to beans happily eat hummus by spoonful. Instead of serving plain pita bread with hummus, try a spiced version of pita chips. For that, you just need to cut pita bread into wedges and spread them on a baking tray and sprinkle some olive oil, grated Parmesan cheese, herbs and salt. Bake them at 200 degree C in a preheated oven for 5-7 minutes. When baked, the pita chips are ready to be served with hummus.
All the snacks listed here are healthy and nutritious. Making your kid eat such snacks will also inculcate healthy eating habits which will hold him in good stead throughout his life.
