As disappointing as infertility can be, the dream to start a family can always be fulfilled through other methods, such as adoption, in-vitro fertilization, and surrogacy. Here are celebrities who went the IVF and surrogacy way to welcome their bundles of joy!

Parenting is one of the most beautiful experiences that a couple can go through. But due to various choices or unforeseen circumstances, not everyone may be lucky enough to conceive their child through natural methods; and some may want to bypass the natural methods altogether. But all hope isn’t lost for those who dream of raising a child. Adoption is a win-win situation for people who want to fulfil their parenting dream, as well as for a privileged child who will receive a new lease of life, and so many of our own celebrities have done so. But there are also the options of In-Vitro Fertilization and surrogacy that have picked up momentum in India; and for these too, we have celebrity examples to look up to!

Celebrities Who Have Had Children Through IVF or Surrogacy

Here’s a list of Indian celebrities who have gone the road less travelled (but should be, more often!) to becoming parents!
    1. Sunny Leone and Daniel Weber

The couple has three kids - Nisha, Noah, and Asher Weber - of which Nisha is an adopted child and the boys were born through surrogacy earlier this year. The couple went from being a twosome to a family in a very short span of time and are grateful that they were able to become parents. In the case of Noah and Asher, Sunny also mentioned that they are very much her biological children, and they’ve been alive in the couple’s hearts for years now. How sweet is that!

    2. Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder

The couple were blessed with triple delights when they underwent In-vitro Fertilization to conceive a baby. Farah was 43 years old when she had the babies and she calls IVF a blessing. She was quoted as saying the following:
“It is important that we come forward and take pride in this because it gives so much courage and so much hope to people who want to do it, but are scared to do it. I proudly say that my children are from IVF and no, a pizza man did not deliver you.”

    3. Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan

Aamir and Kiran welcomed their baby boy Azad Rao Khan in 2011 through surrogacy, at a time when such topics were discussed less openly and were considered orthodox. Kiran had previously suffered a miscarriage and the couple was advised to go through this method to avoid complications. Aamir also openly spoke about how having a baby through surrogacy was the best option considering his wife’s medical complications. Unlike many couples who find some embarrassment in speaking about the child’s conception, Aamir has been vocal by saying that “the child is biologically ours”. He was commended for his openness as his position as a big star could positively influence several couples who are struggling with infertility.

    4. Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan

While the exact cause for the couple choosing surrogacy to conceive their son AbRam is not known, it is speculated that the couple were unable to bear a child even after multiple attempts and thus, decided to go for surrogacy. AbRam was born a preemie baby weighing only 1.5 kg back in 2013, and stayed for quite a long time in the hospital to ensure that he was provided excellent medical care. Today, the little cutie is stealing hearts with his adorable looks and charm!

    5. Sohail Khan and Seema Khan

The couple, who got married in 1998, chose to have their second child ten years after the birth of their first child, son Nirvaan. Through surrogacy, they welcomed their second son Yohan in 2011.

    6. Shreyas Talpade

Shreyas and his wife Deepti stepped into parenthood with the arrival of their daughter in May this year. They have been married for 14 years and their baby was born through surrogacy. The two are struggling to find a name with the multitude of suggestions coming their way, but are very much enjoying being parents!

    7. Tusshar Kapoor

Tusshar became a father to son Laksshya through surrogacy in 2016. He is unmarried and saw surrogacy as a viable option for those looking to be single parents. Dr Firuza Parikh, who helped Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao with the procedures required for surrogacy, was in charge when it came to Tusshar’s matter as well, and she is quoted to have said the following: “I am impressed with Tusshar’s determination to be a father. He maintained a keen interest in the baby’s health at every stage. He will surely be a sensitive and nurturing parent. Recently, we have had many single men and women approved for parenthood. As a public figure, Tusshar’s brave and bold decision will open the field of assisted reproduction making it accessible to not just single parents, but also to many who fervently desire to have a baby.”

    8. Karan Johar

Yet another person who has embraced single parenthood through surrogacy and has become the proud dad of boy-girl twins Yash and Roohi is Karan Johar. The babies were born in 2017 and were preemies; they were extremely underweight, but a great team of doctors and medical facilities were able to nurse them into a happy childhood. The twins are so very adorable and keep making appearances on Karan’s Instagram account!

    9. Revathy

Revathy embraced motherhood quite late in life. When she was unable to adopt a newborn, she went the IVF way with donor sperm and welcomed her daughter Mahee, who is now 4 years old. She considers her baby a gift from heaven, especially after the long procedure that was involved in her arrival.

    10. Lakshmi Manchu

Telugu actress Lakshmi became a mother at the age of 38 through surrogacy, when her daughter Vidya Nirvana was born. Vidya was coincidentally born on her father’s birthday, which also happened to be ‘Father’s Day’ - quite a delightful surprise! Lakshmi and her husband, Andy Srinivasan were looking forward to starting a family and needless to say, they were thrilled with the new addition!

We're glad that these celebrities are open about the process of IVF and surrogacy, which will enable more couples to brave and break through the stigma, and try and make their dream of becoming parents come true!
